Ananda Vikatan rated the film as pride of tamil cinema and rated it a whopping 55 on 100. Such a verdict has not been given by Ananda Vikatan to any film for a decade or so.
Vishnupriya Bhandaram of The Hindu in her review of the Telugu version 'Premalo Padithe' said, "What is perhaps beautiful about the story is that it is an amalgamation of two levels in society — the high, mighty and rich and the poor."
